How do file upload tasks work?

Learn how to create, complete and administer tasks that allow file uploads from students

Applies to: Everyone

Tasks that support file uploads allow students to attach a file to their response. These are great to use for when you'd like to ask students to show their work or to submit a file as their response (e.g. lab reports). Please note that these attachments will need to be manually graded if you'd like to assign any marks associated with the submission.

Allow Attachments

  • To enable file uploads for any task, navigate to the assignment overview page and check the box in the Allow Attachments column.

Attaching Files to Tasks

  • When working on a task that allows (or requires) file attachments, you'll see an attachment button next to the save response button.

  • Once you save the response, you'll have access to information about your attachment and be able to preview, download, or delete the files.

Administering File Upload Tasks

If your students are submitting files as part of their work, you'll need to review those tasks manually to assign any grades to them

  • Following the instructions here, navigate to the task containing the file attachments.
  • On the response attachments info pane (see image above), click the preview button to review the student submission.
  • Markup and annotation are not currently supported, however instructors may upload a complementary document for the student. This could include a separate, annotated file or answer key, etc.
  • Once the student submission has been reviewed enter your grade and consider adding additional context in the "Reason" box.
